Growing up I knew the names of the great players, Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams. I also knew for some reason the Red Sox couldn’t make to the World Series. But that was all I knew about baseball until the fall of ’96. I didn’t know then what I was getting into was some Yankees Magic. It was the beginning of the Torre era, the start of the core-four and 1998 will always be my favorite MLB season.
Growing up in Maine – Summers in Jersey I guess it was bound to happen I would eventually pick a team and follow them. Both of my parents went to school in Boston, but I don’t’ think they ever followed baseball as I did. I heard the stories of my dad getting tickets for cheap at Fenway, and the Citgo sign being some type of night light. But I could not jump into the Red Sox bandwagon. Just like the Yankees, the Red Sox are filled with history. But there was something about the fall of ’96 and I somehow managed to jump on the Yankees bandwagon. I guess you can say, I never really got off. Some seasons I’m watching every game and others I catch a game or two.
Opening day takes me back, to not knowing what is going to happen this season. Will the Red Sox repeat or will the Yankees finally make it
One more thing, GO YANKEES!
